Also known as Tokyo Rose, the Akane apple was developed in Japan in the 1930s and is a cross between Worcester Pearmain and Jonathan. Akane produces medium-sized fruit carrying a balance of sweet and sharp flavors. Considered a dessert apple, it ripens relatively early in the season yet keeps better than most other early season varieties. It was named as one of the top 24 apple varieties by members of the Seattle Tree Fruit Society. This has been one of our personal favorites in the orchard for an all-around apple variety.
