Ashmead’s Kernel is a relatively old, venerable apple variety from Gloucester that won’t win beauty awards (small and heavy russeting) but it excels in its versatility (fresh eating, culinary, cidermaking). This is a good choice for cider makers due to its sharp flavor and high acidity and sugar content. As a tree it can be a bit fussy, taking longer to come into production and having relatively inconsistent cropping between years.
